Apple Dumplings


  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/8 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp. butter


  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk

For the sauce, combine the sugar, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a medium saucepan.  Bring to a boil.  Remove from heat and stir in the 2 tablespoons of butter.  Set aside.

In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt.  Cut in the 2/3 cup butter.  Add the 1/2 cup milk, all at once.  Mix until mixture is completely moistened.  Place on floured surface and knead 5 – 6 times.  Roll dough large enough to cut 5 – 6 squares; each square large enough to completely wrap and apple in.

Peel and core 5 – 6 baking apples (I have found that yellow delicious or Macintosh apples can also be used).  It is OK to cut the apples in half to accomplish this.  In fact, it is better because it helps to ensure that the apples cook completely.

Place an apple in the middle of a pastry square.  While holding the halves together, place a table spoon of sugar in the middle of the halves.  Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg.  Bring up the 4 corners of the pastry and pinch off to seal.  Repeat for all apples.

Place all the apples in a baking dish, leaving enough room around each apple to properly bake.  Pour sauce over the dumplings and sprinkle each dumpling with additional sugar.

Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes.
